What do you wear for doing sports?

Wearing the white thing at Wimbledon

IF your school has a strict uniform policy, spare a thought for the players at Wimbledon, where the dress policy has been tightened up!

Unlike at other Grand Slam tennis tournaments, there is a traditional dress code for players at Wimbledon, which is ‘almost entirely white’. Over the years, players have tried to bend the rules a little, such as with coloured soles on their trainers, bright sweat bands or colourful underwear. No-one will be allowed to get away with that this year, though, as all that’s allowed is a 1cm coloured trim on all items of a player’s clothing, including shorts, T-shirts, caps, headbands and socks!

The tournament referee, Andrew Jarrett, has told all the players to expect the rules to be much tougher this year. There will be “a supply of suitable clothing” in the referee’s office for any player who breaks the rules. So, if Andy Murray or Rafael Nadal are seen wearing clothes that don’t quite fit, it could be because they turned up for a match not wearing the ‘white’ thing!
