What happened in the
Westminster terror attack?
On Wednesday 22 March, there was a terror attack outside the Houses of Parliament in London.
Five people, including a police officer and the attacker, died.
The other three victims were among several pedestrians hit by a car that had mounted the pavement on Westminster Bridge, which is next to Parliament. Lots of people are being treated in hospital, with some suffering “catastrophic injuries”. Seven people are currently in a critical condition.
The attacker was shot dead by police outside the Houses of Parliament.
The police have started a major investigation into what has happened. On Thursday (23 March) morning, the police said that they had arrested eight people in relation to the incident outside of Parliament, following raids in cities like London and Birmingham.
On Wednesday evening, the Prime Minister spoke to reporters outside Downing Street, saying: “For those of us who were in Parliament at the time of this attack, these events provide a particular reminder of the exceptional bravery of our police and security services who risk their lives to keep us safe.
“Once again today, these exceptional men and women ran towards the danger, even as they encouraged others to move the other way.”
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, also spoke out, saying: “I want to reassure all Londoners, and all our visitors, not to be alarmed. Our city remains one of the safest in the world.
“London is the greatest city in the world and we stand together in the face of those who seek to harm us and destroy our way of life.”
